How close are solid-state batteries to commercialization?

The remaining hard problems
The blockers are mostly manufacturing, not chemistry. Solid electrolytes cannot flow to maintain electrode contact, so cells suffer void formation, micro-cracking, and grain-boundary dendrites under repeated cycling; stack pressure and interface coatings are the leading mitigations 2. Sulfide electrolytes are also moisture-sensitive, forcing dry-room processing, and scaling hand-built pilot cells to gigafactory volume at competitive cost remains the industry's biggest open question

Realistic timeline
Most automaker roadmaps now converge on the same shape: pilot lines in 2025-2026, limited production in premium vehicles around 2027-2028, and meaningful EV volume in the early 2030s, with semi-solid designs bridging the gap in the meantime 4
